I called to ask about a reservation or at least to see how busy they were before driving over an hour to get there and was told they will not give any information over the phone about any idea of a wait time.

Its not the kind of place for that. We were there twice and the wait for a table was 30 minutes. A bar seat is shorter. Both worth the wait.
